Guilty

A Federal jury in New York City convicted Chinese billionaire Ng Lap Seng guilty on charges of bribery and money laundering relating to his scheme to get the United Nations to authorize construction of a billion-dollar Conference Center in Macau. Our readers are well aware that we have been following this case from the onset and have reported on its progress over the past 2 years. The case is not over though, since his sentence has not been determined. He may very well enter into a cooperation agreement with Federal authorities in an attempt to reduce his sentence. We will update you when that occurs.

However, far more significant for Dominica with dire implications is the case pending against Turkish gold trader Reza Zarrab. His case will also be tried in the same courtroom as the one in which Lap Seng was tried, is scheduled to start in October this year. Zarrab is the second leg of a three-legged stool involving the massive Iran sanctions busting operation masterminded by Iranian billionaire Babak Zanjani, who currently sits in an Iranian prison on death row. The third leg of that stool is Ali Reza Monfared, who was coddled and protected by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and his government. Mr. Monfared fled his hideout in Malaysia and ended up in Dominica, where he was wined and dined by Mr. Skerrit and his cabal. With Iranian and Interpol on the hunt for him, Mr. Skerrit allowed Mr. Monfared to escape the clutches of the world's police, shuttling him out of Dominica mysteriously. Monfared ended up in hiding in the Dominican Republic, where he was eventually snatched and extradited to Tehran.

Mr. Skerrit has a lot to answer for his harboring of an international fugitive. It is just a matter of time before that clock strikes midnight. In the near future we will be bringing you more on this case.
